Questionnaire Response

Tony Hill - Selkirk

1. Why did you decide to run in the Manitoba election?

Beautiful Lake Winnipeg is under siege by phosphorous pollution. Experts say if this pollution is left unaddressed, it will render our lake unsafe for swimming and it will have devastating consequences on our fishing industry. As citizens of the Interlake and Selkirk Riding, we have a great responsibility to our lake. We take in its beauty. We kayak its waters. And we play along its shores. It gives us so much, and yet we take it for granted. To those of us who live next door to Lake Winnipeg as its closest neighbour, we cannot take it for granted any longer. It is in danger and it needs our help.

Moreover, the global climate crisis is the biggest threat we face.  The time for action—real action—on addressing climate change is now. As a firefighter, I know the value of arriving to the scene and taking action as quickly as possible. There can be no more delay. Acknowledging our climate crisis is not alarmist-thinking, it is forward thinking. And, taking action on our climate crisis is not anti-progress, it is solution focused. These are the reasons I am running in this election.

2. Why should a voter consider electing you to represent them?

Since retiring as a Captain with the Winnipeg department a year ago, I have discovered a new calling: protecting the environment and saving Lake Winnipeg and the Interlake’s wetlands. Throughout my career as a firefighter, I lived and worked by a code of honour. As the Green Party candidate for the Selkirk Riding, you can count on me.

When I watch my seventeen year old daughter studying for exams and preparing for university, I can’t help but worry for her future and the future of her generation. I believe the future is Green and I hope you’ll join me in the fight to save our planet.

3. What key issue(s) / topic(s) will you stand for in your role as MLA, and why are these important to you?

The Green Party has a well-prepared platform, including a proposed and costed-out guaranteed income program, universal child care, and a fully-developed plan for reducing carbon emissions and growing the green economy. The Green Party is neither left, nor right. We are forward.
