Regan Wolfrom - Elmwood
1. Why did you decide to run in the Manitoba election?
I feel that it is important to break the back-and-forth cycle between spending without a plan and slashing without a plan, and to provide Manitobans with the option of working through our problems with policies based on existing research and current successful outcomes. It can sound great to say that a government is putting a large burst of funding in an area, or that the government is looking to trim fat, but when all of these actions are done with no long-term planning and short-term re-evaluation of the plan based on both successes and failures, it leads to the flat-tire governments that we’ve had since at least Gary Filmon in the 1980s.
2. Why should a voter consider electing you to represent them?
I’m a longtime resident of the area, and I’ve been married to fifteen years to Christine and have two children, Isla and Colin. I ran for the Manitoba Liberals in the 2009 Elmwood By-Election, and I’ve worked in the community on various issues, such as keeping community centres open and improving infrastructure planning.
I believe in the potential of Manitoba, but I also know that we have our fair share of challenges to get there. And I am ready to work hard to bring everyone back to the table to figure out the best way to get where we need to go.
3. What key issue(s) / topic(s) will you stand for in your role as MLA, and why are these important to you?
I would say that the biggest issue in Elmwood and East Kildonan right now is healthcare, with the meth crisis being a close and related second. The goal of myself and the Manitoba Liberals is to increase front-line support, both to medical staff and to community organizations that are already making a difference in health and safety of the community. We need both long-term plans and immediate support.
Other major objectives are coming up with plans to reduce climate change, getting smarter about infrastructure spending, and reducing poverty with programs that both increase personal potential and grow our economy.
4. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?
It’s time to break the Orange and Blue cycle of spending and slashing, where picking fights and scoring political points are held in higher regard than coming up with plans and seeing them through.
