Mike Moyes - Riel

1. Why did you decide to run in the Manitoba election?

I was inspired to run for office by my kids, Landon (11) and Nyah (9) and I want to work to make our province a better place. As a teacher and community member, I see many families struggling and over the past three years the Conservative government has been making cuts that have had a negative effect. I would like to fight for everyday Manitobans and make their lives a little bit easier.

2. Why should a voter consider electing you to represent them?

As someone raising my family with aging parents, the struggles people in Riel are facing are my own. I am interested in common sense solutions- strategic improvements in health care, education and child care while keeping Manitoba affordable. I am looking to take what I have heard on the doorstep to the Legislature and to work with people, different groups and the different levels of government to get results for the community.

3. What key issue(s) / topic(s) will you stand for in your role as MLA, and why are these important to you?

The single biggest issue facing our community has been the changes to health care and how they are negatively affecting many constituents. I have heard countless stories how the changes Brian Pallister’s government made to health care has made their lives harder. I would like to be a part of the solution to the chaos in health care by: re-opening two ER’s, hiring more nurses, improving mental health services, addressing the meth crisis and making strategic investments like re-instituting funding for physiotherapy after surgery. As someone who has previously needed the health care system when I was battling cancer, I appreciate the stress and difficulties families are facing when the health care system is not working.

As a teacher and parent, I am also passionate about education and ensuring our young people are getting the very best opportunities to learn and grow. I believe strongly that our plan for smaller class sizes for K-3 and providing more supports for those that need it will pay huge dividends down the road. I also think that there needs to be more of a focus on both ensuring the availability of daycare spots and ensuring public daycare centres are adequately funded.

4. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I believe I can be a strong voice for Riel. I am someone that is able to work with different people to achieve results. Should I be given the privilege of being elected, I am committed to working hard on your behalf and always listening to your concerns. Together, lets improve things for all of us!
