Prairies help break AgriStability logjam
April 1, 2021
The Producer - Canadian farmers will have access to only some of the proposed $170 million in new AgriStability money after agriculture ministers reached a partial deal last week. Meanwhile, work continues on the whole farm margin insurance program that prairie ministers have been touting. It follows a report from the Nichols Group done last year that recommended replacing AgriStability with margin insurance. Producers could select a coverage level and premiums would be calculated at the beginning of each program year. He said that would mean provinces could sign off on a program in 2022 and implement it in 2023.
AgriStability showdown continues
March 25, 2021
The Producer - Pressure is mounting on the Prairie governments to ante up their share of AgriStability program enhancements. “It has been just over 110 days since we made this offer to the provinces,” Bibeau said March 17. “Alberta’s government called on the federal government over two weeks ago, on March 2, to schedule the next federal-provincial-territorial meeting to discuss and finally vote on short-term changes to AgriStability,” said Devin Dreeshen. None of the ministers indicated if they had actually taken the proposal, and its accompanying costs, to their cabinets. ADVERTISEMENTProvincial organizations including 11 commodity associations in Alberta also said the decision is urgent because the deadline to enrol in AgriStability is April 30.
