Questionnaire Response

Elliot Macdonald - Kildonan - River East

1. Why did you decide to run in the Manitoba election?

As a teacher, I always challenged my students to stand up for what they believe in. Over the last three years, I have been disappointed with decisions made by the Conservative government – closing the Concordia and Seven Oaks emergency rooms, as well as the recent education commission – and as a vice-principle in Winnipeg, I have seen the impacts that these choices have already made and will continue to make to my community for years to come. These issues encouraged me to stand up for what I believe in and run for the NDP in this election.

2. Why should a voter consider electing you to represent them?

I have deep roots in North Kildonan – my Amma grew up in the area and she attended Victory School and Centennial School. I now live in the community with my partner Jenny, our 2 cats and dog Dozer, where we are looking forward to starting our family. In addition to losing both the Seven Oaks and Concordia emergency rooms, the current government hasn’t repaired the North End Water Treatment Centre. It’s clear that our community has been neglected by Pallister’s Conservatives and our voices are not being heard in the Legislature. I’m running for the NDP because I want to ensure that the government is responsive to the needs and interests of the residents in Kildonan-River East, so that it can continue to be an attractive place to live and raise a family.

3. What key issue(s) / topic(s) will you stand for in your role as MLA, and why are these important to you?

The biggest issues facing our community are health care and education. I have been fighting hard to keep Seven Oaks and Concordia emergency rooms open, and have seen firsthand the detrimental effects their closures have had on people in our community. The two other things I will stand up for are accessibility for all and the environment.

4. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

Manitobans want a more affordable life. To me, that means a province that allows everyone to enjoy its many wonderful sights and one that has a functioning healthcare system that supports communities in northern Winnipeg. I believe in this community and will bring that same drive, energy and diligence to the legislature, ensuring the voice of our community in Kildonan-River East is heard. I hope I can count on your support on September 10th.
