Questionnaire Response

Chris Pullen - Red River North

1. Why did you decide to run in the Manitoba election?

I decided to run because as a 20 year healthcare employee I’ve seen how bad things were under the previous PC government and how bad they are getting again under the current government. Pallister’s cuts to healthcare are jeopardizing patient safety and the quality of care they receive. Staff are overworked and stressed out from constantly working understaffed. Sick time and overtime continue to climb. These changes were about better results and a better cost, or so we were told. I’ve seen neither.

I disagree with his entire agenda. If its the cuts to education and infrastructure, lack of action on climate change, attempts to privatize as much of our services as he can. This is all occurring while receiving more money from Ottawa then ever before and some how Pallister has managed to push our economy to the brink of recession and has no plan to save it. Recession equals less government revenues which means more and more cuts to services that people rely on. Its my opposition to the negative effect that Pallisters decisions have on everyone I know that made me run in this election.

2. Why should a voter consider electing you to represent them?

I’ve spent most of my adult life working with people and organizations to find solutions to their problems. Not just telling them how I’m going to fix it but actually listening to what they have to say about things and working with them on it. I’ve spent 12 years as a union rep and during that time I’ve learnt a lot about not only labour issues but a lot about the issues that everyone faces, day to day, that is how I first became interested in politics. I represented my members and gave them a voice when they didn’t have one. I spoke up and fought for them no matter how trivial an issue might seem, something that isn’t important to me is a huge deal for them and should be treated as such. I plan to bring the same sort of principals and work ethic to my political career and as the MLA for the people of Red River North. Unlike the current government I’m willing to work with anyone regardless of their political position or differing opinions from my own, to come to good solutions to fix the issues that face Red River North and Manitoba in general.

3. What key issue(s) / topic(s) will you stand for in your role as MLA, and why are these important to you?

Healthcare is number 1. I see what the cuts are doing to are system and things are getting worse and worse with no end in sight. Reversing these cuts has to happen and focusing on ways to improve the system and dealing with the things that are actually plaguing it like lack bed capacity in hospitals and long term care facilities.

The health of our environment is very important to me, protecting our water systems, reducing carbon emissions and reducing our solid waste are all things that need to be focused on that not only will make our province a healthier place to live but will have a direct benefit to our economy as well creating new sustainable jobs for Manitoba.

Education and Child Care are also very important to me. As a father with two children 4 and 7. I know the importance of a proper education system so my children can get a good start on life. I was lucky and had an on site daycare but what if I didn’t my wife doesn’t go back to work? like so many people now.  Affordable, available Child Care and a strong education system are necessities that we should have.
