Mitch Obach - Selkirk

1. Why did you decide to run in the Manitoba election?

I decided to run in this election because too many people feel disconnected with their provincial government. They want to be heard and they want a more collaborative approach from their elected officials. I have nearly completed a Master’s Degree in Community Development and I have learned that local residents are experts in their own communities. I have developed the skills to get work done in our community and will always listen to my constituents to best understand what change you want.

2. Why should a voter consider electing you to represent them?

If elected I will implement an aggressive community engagement strategy. I will personally visit every residence in Selkirk and St. Andrews by the end of 2020, in order to hear directly from you how I can best serve our community. I will let you know through social and print media when I will be in your neighborhood so you can have your questions ready.

Voters should consider me because I am the only candidate in Selkirk that can defeat Brian Pallister. I am pragmatic, hard-working and above all will always put our community first!

3. What key issue(s) / topic(s) will you stand for in your role as MLA, and why are these important to you?

At this point I have canvassed most of the constituency and the overwhelming issue that is raised with me is concerns over where Brian Pallister is taking our Healthcare system. Residents have told me that since closing Seven Oaks ER our own Selkirk ER has seen dramatic increases in wait times and our nurses are overworked and understaffed. We will re-open Seven Oaks ER to take the pressure off of Selkirk as well as hire and train more nurses.

4. Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I am a teacher with the Lord Selkirk School Division most recently teaching Grade 8 and 9 English at Lockport School. I enjoy working with young people and I have been very active as a youth sports coach for 20 years. As a youth sports head coach, I have won three provincial championships (one in baseball, two in football) and I founded the Interlake Thunder Football Club in 2011. The club has allowed hundreds of local boys and girls the opportunity to play tackle football and several have gone on to play collegiate and junior football after graduating from high school. In 2016 my wife and I founding the Interlake Players Traveling Musical Theatre Company and we tour our shows across the Interlake helping raise money for community charities and non-profits. I am dedicated to making our community the best it can be!
